Location: Bonnevoie

Though not directly in the city center, Bonnevoie is very popular with the international crowd living in the city. It is located south-east of the city center and is super close to the train station for easy and convenient travel throughout the country and elsewhere! Compared to the city center, Bonnevoie boasts some relatively cheaper housing, and families moving to the area tend to gravitate towards the neighborhood for its cosmopolitan, lively, yet relaxing atmosphere.

Split into two different sections, Bonnevoie-North/Verlorenkost and Bonnevoie-South, it is the most populated districted of Luxembourg city. There over 110 different nationalities living in the area and it has a large focus on multicultural events and lifestyles.

Culture: The Rotondes

Consisting of two circular buildings near Luxembourg Station, the Rotondes have recently been converted into one of the cities largest cultural and performing arts centers. Built in 1875, these structures, each measuring 52 meters in diameter, were originally designed as a depot and maintenance facility for steam locomotives. They were later utilized as a storage and repair workshop for the buses that run throughout the city.

In 2007, the Rotondes were able to leave a portion of this industrial history behind by and welcomed several art exhibitions and programs for audiences both young and old. The space is now regularly used as a performance venue, exhibition space, and conference hall. There is even a cafe in Rotondes 2 called Buvette, located right next to the areas specified concert space.

Where to Eat: Brasserie Beaulieu

Located close to the city center, Beaulieu is known as the perfect neighborhood hangout! They have no set menu, only a chalkboard that lists the food of the day. This changes regularly, so you’ll never tire of visiting Beaulieu, especially with their super friendly staff! During the summer they open their terrace to those dining at the restaurant, and whether you are just looking for a drink or to sit for a meal, the atmosphere is extremely welcoming. The staff will even recommend a glass of wine to pair with your food!

Brasserie Beaulieu is run by the same team that used to run L’Adresse, and it is easy to see why this is such a popular place in Bonnevoie.

Grab a Drink: Bouneweger Stuff

Bouneweger Stuff, commonly referred to as “Stuff” by the locals, is a bar that embodies the essence of a cozy living room. It has a relaxed ambiance with its comfortable couches and vintage benches. Additionally, you’ll find a corner stocked with complimentary board games, ensuring entertainment for everyone. The staff is exceptionally friendly, making you feel right at home. They have a large drink menu and host an adorable Sunday Brunch (11:00am-3:00pm) for all to enjoy!

Back in 2012, a portion of the bar was utilized as a filming location for the Luxembourgish sitcom “Comeback.” You may even cross paths with some of the actors from the TV series “Capitani” during your visit. Among them is the renowned actor Luc Schiltz, who portrays the lead character, a police inspector. It’s not uncommon for them to drop by for a refreshing drink at Bouneweger Stuff.

Groceries: Cactus Marché Bonnevoie

Located in practically the center of Bonnevoie is the Cactus market – a medium-sized grocery store for all of your shopping needs. Their hours are 7:30am-8pm and it serves as a great supplement to the other small shops in the area. There are several cute weekend markets throughout the city that are also worth checking out!

Green Spaces: Parc Kaltreis

Situated in the southern region of Bonnevoie-South, the Parc Kaltreis was established in the 1980s and has since become a vital component of Luxembourg City’s open space network. It connects two seperate spaces and landscape types; to the north lies the urban landscape comprising residential neighborhoods, while to the south it embraces the cultural landscape characterized by agricultural fields, forests, and meadows. This strategic location serves as a bridge between these two landscapes, fostering a harmonious atmosphere within the park.

The “Urban Center” houses the popular “space” themed playground, which was highly desired by the community. Even from afar, you can spot the towering “Apollo 11” rocket slide, adorned with red and white checkered perforated sheet metal panels. Standing at a remarkable height of 7.80 meters, it serves as the captivating focal point of the entire play zone.

Within the two play areas, you will also find a boules field, a basketball court, a volleyball court, and a street workout park. The scenic sections of the park prioritize tranquility, rejuvenation, and a slower pace. Meandering pathways bring the landscape to life and beckon visitors to take leisurely walks, promoting a sense of serenity and calmness.
