Water Sports: The Best Places to Fish, Kayak, Waterski, Windsurf and More
Fishing
There are plenty of places to fish around Luxembourg! Just make sure that you are aware of the specific rules of each siteโsome places donโt allow you to kill the fish, for instance. One place to check out isย รtangs de Fischbach, located in the middle of the country. Here, youโll find two trout fishing ponds, a brasserie, and a playground! You can also reserve the pond for large group events. Itโs open Thursday through Sunday from 7am until 6pm. There are also other fish ponds inย Lamadelaine/Petangeย andย Boulaide!
Luxembourgโs larger cities have several spots for fishing as well. In Esch-sur-Alzette, you can fish on eitherย inland rivers or theย rivers bordering Germany, although you will need a permit for the latter. You can fish on theย Vianden reservoirย too, as long as you have all the proper authorizations! Fishing licences are issued at the tourist office in Vianden (you can buy a fishing licence to fish in Vianden or a fishing licence to fish in the Our reservoir).
If you want to fish in Vianden, you will also need to apply online for the border water permit (click here), as the Our flows along the German border. Within 15 minutes you will have a PDF document of your border water permit on your smartphone.
Finally, up in Echternach, you can fish on theย Sรปreย (with a fishing license, which you can apply for here) or inย Lake Echternach! A single day of fishing on Lake Echternach is โฌ12, but you can extend your permit for longer if you wish. An annual pass costs โฌ250, and there are other options in-between. Happy fishing!
Canoeing & Kayaking
There are also numerous places to enjoy a relaxing canoe or kayak ride down a river (and get a good workout in the process!). Head up toย Dillingenย to canoe down the Sรปre. A one-seat canoe is โฌ25, and a two-seat canoe is โฌ40. You can spend about three hours on the water, and you must pay in cash. Alternatively, the youth hostel inย Lultzhausenย offers canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddle rentals! The prices are โฌ36 for a canoe (3 seats), โฌ21 for a kayak (1 seat), and โฌ21 per stand-up paddle (1 โseatโ). Thereโs also a โฌ100 security deposit per boat that will be returned to you as long as there is no damage to the equipment.
If you have your own canoe already,ย Bech-Kleinmacherย is the place for you! Enjoy a peaceful trip down the Moselle while taking in its natural beauty. You do have to be careful to not disturb the wildlife, plant or animal, as the area is protected. You can also head over toย Wasserbilligย for a scenic ride down the Sauer valley. Itโs home to a lot of different natural wildlife, such as butterflies, dragonflies, and birds.
Finally, stop byย Diekirchย for canoeing and kayaking! (If youโve seen ourย Diekirch itinerary, this might look familiar.) Youโll paddle for about 3 kilometers, learning about canoeing and the surrounding nature in the process, and then end up right back where you started. The entire trip takes about 2 hours. Or, head over toย Wallendorf-Pontย for a 3- to 3.5-hour canoe trip down the Sรปre! You donโt need any experience to complete this route, and you can go at your own pace (or whatever pace the water sets for you!). A 1-person kayak is โฌ22, a 2-person Kayak costs โฌ40 (โฌ42.50 with a child). You can also rent SUPs!
Other Boating
If canoeing and kayaking arenโt your thing, there are plenty of other boating options for you! Try pedal boating onย Lake Echternachย if youโre in the mood for something fun with friends or family. You can rent a pedal boat and up to 5 people can fit in the boat. You can also rent stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) ! Children ages 12 and up can go on these. They are open Wednesday- Monday from 11am-7pm. Also, a part of Lake Echternach is open for swimming!
If you have both a motor boat and a permit (you can take a course inย Strassen) you can take your boat for a spin on the Moselle! Your boat must be clearly identified, and there is a speed limit of 30 km/h. For launching boats, ramps are available at Schwebsange, Bech-Kleinmacher, Ehnen and Grevenmacher.
High EnergyโWaterskiing, Windsurfing, etc.
Have you ever wanted to learn how to waterski? We sure have! Why not head up toย Rosportย to give it a try? They have courses in waterskiing and wakeboarding for both beginners and experienced riders. You can also gather two other friends together and hop in the โBananaโ for some fun! The three of you will be pulled by the boat for โฌ25 for 8-10 minutes. Waterskiing or wakeboarding lessons are โฌ25 per rider. Alternatively, if you already know how to waterski and just want to get behind the boat for a bit, you can at a rate of โฌ2.50 per minute. Opening hours (May-September) are from 5:30pm-10pm.
Or, have you ever wanted to learn to sail and windsurf?ย Lultzhausenย is the place for you! Itโs a full day of being on the water and is a great way to introduce kids to the art of sailing. The price for the day is โฌ160 for 16 youths. You can also head back up toย Remichย for โWater Adventuresโ, which are a little bit of everything! Drive an electric boat without a license, take a ride on the speedboat (with 450 HP), or enjoy a party on the water.
These are some of our favorite places to spend some time on the water without necessarily needing to get wet. What types of boating do you enjoy? And where do you like to do it?
