Knokke-Heist Travel Guide: Where to Stay, Eat & Explore on the Belgian Coast
Quick Guide: Knokke-Heist
Location: Belgian Coast, Belgium
Distance from Luxembourg: Approximately 3.5 hours by car.
Best For: Couples, girls' getaways, food lovers, art enthusiasts, wellness escapes, and shopping weekends
Ideal Stay: 3-4 nights
Don't Miss: Zwin Nature Park, Het Zoute, Luc Peire Museum, beach sunsets, and the local food scene
Just three and a half hours from Luxembourg, the Belgian coast makes for an easy weekend escape. I had visited Knokke-Heist before, but until this trip, I had never really taken the time to explore it properly.
For years, I heard people talk about Knokke-Heist as Belgium's most glamorous seaside destination. I never quite understood the hype. After spending three days exploring its restaurants, nature reserve, art scene, beaches and hotels, I finally get it.
What surprised me most wasn't the luxury; they do call it the Saint Tropez of Belgium after all. It was the balance. Knokke-Heist manages to feel sophisticated without being pretentious, lively without being overwhelming and elegant without losing its sense of community. It's the kind of place where you can spend the morning birdwatching in a nature reserve, the afternoon shopping for designer fashion and the evening with your feet in the sand and a drink in hand watching the sunset over the North Sea.
Our itinerary was packed, yet I still left feeling like there was more to discover. In fact, despite spending three days by the sea, we never even made it into the water because there was simply so much to see and do.
If you're planning a trip to the Belgian coast, here's how we would recommend experiencing Knokke-Heist.
Where to Stay: Hotel Britannia
One of the highlights of our visit was staying at Hotel Britannia, a beautifully renovated boutique hotel in the heart of the Zoute district.
The exterior reflects the area's classic Anglo-Norman coastal architecture, while the interiors feel fresh, modern, and luxurious.
What makes a hotel memorable is often the small details, and Hotel Britannia excels at them. There were thoughtful touches throughout our stay, from a beauty pouch filled with Guerlain sample products to Belgian chocolate waiting at the coffee station. The robes were wonderfully soft, the bed was incredibly comfortable and guests can even choose their preferred pillow from the hotel's pillow menu.
Located just steps from both the beach and Knokke's shopping streets, the hotel is perfectly positioned for a romantic getaway, a girls' weekend or a relaxing coastal solo escape.

Explore Knokke's Shopping Streets
One of the first things we did after arriving was take a stroll through Knokke's famous shopping district.
The town is known as one of Belgium's premier shopping destinations, and it quickly became clear why. Along streets such as Kustlaan, Lippenslaan and Dumortierlaan, you'll find everything from iconic Belgian brands to international luxury houses.
Fashion lovers can browse boutiques including Delvaux, Essentiel Antwerp, and Natan, while smaller independent shops and seasonal pop-ups offer plenty of unique discoveries.
One of my personal finds was YAYA Concept Store, which combines beautiful fashion and homewares just a short walk from the beach. They also have a small cafe which serves great coffee to be enjoyed in the store on seriously comfy couches or while you stroll around.
Even luxury brands feel different here. Louis Vuitton and Hermès are housed in charming seaside villas rather than imposing flagship stores, giving the entire shopping experience a more intimate feel.
A particularly useful feature is the free electric Shopping Shuttle, which connects the main shopping streets and makes it easy to move between districts without needing your car. Trust me, you'll appreciate it if your shopping bags start piling up.
Sunset Drinks on the Beach
Before dinner, we headed to one of Knokke's beach bars for an aperitif.
There was something incredibly special about having my feet in the sand while listening to the waves crash onto the shore. Earlier that same day I had been in Luxembourg, hundreds of kilometres from the sea.
As the sun began to set, families strolled along the promenade, dogs raced across the beach (everyone has a dog) and locals greeted one another as they passed.
One of the things that surprised me most about Knokke-Heist was how welcoming it felt. For a destination with such an upscale reputation, there was a real sense of community everywhere I went.
Dinner at Tatau
If you're looking for a memorable dinner in Knokke-Heist, put Tatau at the top of your list.
Located directly on the seafront, the restaurant combines Asian-inspired flavours with Belgian ingredients and creates dishes that are both creative and incredibly flavourful.
As someone who no longer drinks alcohol, I was particularly impressed by their extensive selection of non-alcoholic beverages. It's still surprisingly rare to find restaurants that take this part of the menu seriously.
The duck nems were outstanding and every sauce that arrived at the table seemed better than the last. I also tried the bao burger, something I had never seen before, while my partner enjoyed super fresh and perfectly cooked shrimp.
Combined with the sunset views and excellent people-watching opportunities, it made for a fantastic first evening.

Rent a Golf Cart
One of the most unexpectedly fun parts of the trip was getting around in a golf cart.
Golf carts are a common sight in Knokke-Heist, and drivers are completely accustomed to sharing the road with them. Parking becomes effortless and exploring the town feels far more relaxed than constantly moving a car.
If you're spending more than a day in Knokke-Heist, I highly recommend renting one. It quickly becomes part of the experience.

Breakfast and Wellness at La Réserve Resort
For a taste of five-star luxury, we spent a morning at La Réserve Resort.
Breakfast overlooks the peaceful Zegemeer Lake and includes everything you would expect from a luxury hotel buffet, along with made-to-order egg dishes and excellent coffee.
After breakfast, I headed upstairs to their spa for the Signature La Réserve Body Ritual.
The treatment began with a full-body exfoliation followed by a massage performed on a heated quartz bed. Having experienced many spa treatments over the years, this was my first time encountering a quartz bed. The warmth and the way the tiny stones adapt to the shape of your body create an extraordinary sense of comfort. When the treatment ended, getting up felt almost impossible.
One thing worth noting if you're considering a spa visit: non-hotel guests can access the wellness and fitness facilities by purchasing a day pass for €45. Guests booking a treatment of 80 minutes or longer are generally granted access to the wellness area before or after their treatment.
While I personally prefer wellness access to be automatically included with all treatments, which is fairly standard at many spas, I suspect La Réserve's approach is designed to preserve the exclusivity of the space. The wellness area is intimate rather than sprawling, and limiting access helps ensure a peaceful, uncrowded experience.

Discover the History of Het Zoute
One of the absolute highlights of the visit was a guided walking tour through Het Zoute.
Much of the credit goes to our guide, Sabine, whose passion for Knokke-Heist was contagious. By the end of the tour, I felt like I had developed an entirely new appreciation for the town.
As we wandered through beautiful residential streets, we learned about the area's unique architecture, its development over time, and fascinating stories from Knokke's past.
One of my favourite stories involved the historic bathing cabins that once allowed visitors to enter the sea without being seen. The cabins would literally be rolled into the water before being brought back to shore.
These kinds of stories transformed what could have been a simple walk into a fascinating journey through local history.
Lunch at Studio M.CCC
For lunch, we headed to Studio M.CCC, a stylish Italian restaurant that quickly became one of our favourite dining experiences of the trip.
We sat outside on the beautiful terrace and enjoyed smoked scamorza with truffle and honey, spaghetti with incredibly fresh clams, and cacio e pepe ravioli with artichokes.
Coming from Luxembourg, where truly fresh seafood can be harder to find, the quality was immediately noticeable.
The interiors are equally beautiful, and the restaurant was completely full throughout our visit, so reservations are highly recommended.

Explore Zwin Nature Park
Nature lovers should make time for Zwin Nature Park.
The drive there alone is beautiful (especially by golf cart), passing through open landscapes that feel entirely different from the centre of Knokke.
Before entering the park, we visited MortAmour, a striking photography exhibition that offered a thoughtful reflection on nature, life and mortality.
Inside the park itself, visitors will find an extensive network of walking and cycling paths, birdwatching points and observation towers.
We chose a circular walking route that led us to several observation huts. From one platform, we found ourselves almost eye-level with enormous storks. From others, we were able to watch different bird species moving across the reserve.
We spent a couple of hours exploring, but you could easily devote half a day to the park.

Dinner at De Kruier
Although located just outside Knokke-Heist, De Kruier is well worth the short drive.
The restaurant sits beside a beautiful historic windmill and is known for showcasing local ingredients and traditional Belgian cuisine.
Unfortunately, a short but powerful storm arrived just as we did, preventing us from enjoying the award-winning terrace. Even so, the setting remained beautiful.
Everything we tasted reflected the quality of the local produce. The smoked salmon was excellent, but the standout dessert combined strawberries grown nearby with homemade vanilla ice cream.
It was easy to understand why this restaurant was full of locals.

Following the Footsteps of Artist Luc Peire
The final day introduced us to an artist I somehow knew very little about before this trip: Luc Peire.
The exhibition Abstractie in Overvloed (until October 25) explores the evolution of the Belgian artist's work and reveals how his style transformed throughout his career.
What made the experience especially powerful was visiting the nearby Peiremuseum afterwards.
Located inside the artist's former home and studio, the museum offers a rare glimpse into his creative world. You can still see his easel, desk, sketches and even paint marks on the floor.
For me, the true highlight is Environnement I, Peire's immersive mirrored installation. Mirrors on the floor and ceiling create the illusion of infinite vertical space, producing a surprisingly emotional experience. Luc Peire made two of these installations, you can experience the other one in Mexico City.
Standing alone inside the installation was one of the most memorable moments of the entire trip.

Lunch at Bardot Brunch
Before heading back to Luxembourg, we made one final food stop at Bardot Brunch.
Inspired by the French Riviera, the café is bright, welcoming and full of charm.
I ordered the Bardot Croque with pastrami, which immediately transported me back to some of my favourite New York delis. It was exactly what I had been craving. My partner chose the salmon and avocado toast, which was equally fresh and beautifully presented.
Combined with excellent coffee and genuinely friendly service, it was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Knokke-Heist.

Final Thoughts
Before this visit, I thought Knokke-Heist was simply Belgium's luxury beach destination.
Now I understand that it's much more than that.
It's a place where nature, culture, art, wellness, food, shopping, and community all coexist. It's where you can spend the morning watching birds in a nature reserve, the afternoon exploring galleries, and the evening with your feet in the sand watching the sun disappear into the North Sea.
Most importantly, it's a place that encourages you to slow down. And sometimes, that's exactly what we need.
*We were invited by Tourism Knokke-Heist to discover the destination over three days. As always, all opinions are our own.
