Top Hiking Trails in Luxembourg

Luxembourg may be small, but when it comes to hiking, it offers some of the most diverse and scenic landscapes in Europe. From the dramatic rock formations of the Mullerthal region to the forested valleys of the Ardennes and the red-earth landscapes of the Minett, the country is a paradise for walkers of all levels. Whether you’re looking for a challenging long-distance trek, a peaceful nature escape, or a relaxed walk through the city, Luxembourg’s hiking trails deliver spectacular views, rich history, and unforgettable experiences. Here are some of the most beautiful hiking trails in Luxembourg and the surrounding region to add to your list this year.


Escapardenne Éislek Trail

This 106 km or 32-hour trail connects the Belgian and Luxembourg Ardennes and offers a picturesque, varied landscape. You can walk on five daily stages that cover vast terrains and slopes, beautiful views of the coniferous forest and the cultural heritage of the Ardennes.


5 trail stages:

  • Kautenbach – Clervaux: 24 km

  • Clervaux – Asselborn: 21 km

  • Asselborn – Houffalize (B): 20 km

  • Houffalize (B) – Nadrin (B): 24 km

  • Nadrin (B) – La Roche-en-Ardenne (B): 18 km

Minett Trail

The Minett Trail spans over 90km and is beautifully rich in nature and history along the way. Follow the trail through Minett’s nature reserves and discover the beautiful “Terres Rouges” (land of the red rocks) and the vast biodiversity of Luxembourg. The Minett trail connects all the major cities and tourist hubs, so you’ll be able to discover this one-of-a-kind region at your own pace. You can also opt to take on this trail with a guided tour, or over a few days at their eleven accommodation options along the trail. 


Choose your path thanks to the trail stages that can be found of the Minett Trail website! Choose from the 10 stages that this trail has to offer, ranging between 16,63 km and 6,12 km in distance and all with something unique to offer.

Moselle 3 Trail 

Take a trip to three countries across 33 kilometres on the M³-Trail in the Moselle region. Travel along the German-French-Luxembourg border region as you take in its incredible charm and rich history.


Find out more about how the surrounding regions work together in harmony thanks to their people, history and culture. The M³-Trail features key landmarks such as the European Museum in Schengen, the Château des Ducs de Lorraine in Sierck les Bains and the Franco-German Peace Chapel near Perl. This is not a hike for beginners, so come prepared with good footwear to handle the steep altitude changes.

Mullerthal Trail

Spanning across 112km, the Mullerthal Trail leads you through the depths and true beauty that is the Mullerthal Region. Known as Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland, the area offers three main hiking trails that lead through mossy forests, rocky outcrops, picturesque stream valleys, and open landscapes. Follow each of the trails, and you’ll be greeted with beautiful viewpoints and cultural sites. Several tour options are available, ranging from 4 km to 14 km, that will take you through the cultural highlights and historic information that the trail has to offer, like the Tudor Museum in Rosport or the majestic Larochette castle.


3 main routes of the Mullerthal:

  • Mullerthal Trail Route 1 : 36km and shows the typical landscape elements, which are the rocks, forests and pastures.

  • Mullerthal Trail Route 2: 38km, passing through the heart of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland, offers the best rock formations of the trails.

  • Mullerthal Trail Route 3: 38km, featuring the rock formation, many stream valleys, and romantic castles.

Bavigne Loop

This loop trail in Diekirch is relatively easy overall, with only a few steep sections to navigate. The 9.2km trail near Lac de la Haute-Sûre is a great trail to visit year-round, but is recommended from March to November. The trail is a loop that will take between 2h 30 and 3h, and after your hike, Bavigine welcomes you to stop by Liefrange bathing areas right off the path, and cool off in the water.

Petrusse Valley

If you’re looking for a good walk in the heart of Luxembourg City, then this is the one for you! The Petrusse Valley walk is a 6.9km trail that takes,s on average 2 hours to complete. The walk winds through the Pétrusse Valley and into the Grund, where you’ll pass the iconic Pont du Grund for some of the best photo spots in Luxembourg. Continue through Clausen to Pfaffenthal near the glass elevator, another great viewpoint. From there, the trail loops back via Pescatore Park into the city centre. A perfect route for a relaxed walk, especially on a Sunday!


Difficulty: Easy to moderate 


Escapardenne Lee Trail

This trail runs from Ettelbruck to Kautenbach, passing through dense forest and quiet river valleys with steep terrain. This long-distance trail offers some of the most breathtaking landscapes and key cultural highlights of the Eislek region.


3 trail stages:

  • Ettelbruck - Bourscheid-Moulin: 18 km

  • Bourscheid-Moulin - Hoscheid: 19 km

  • Hoscheid - Kautenbach: 15 km


Difficulty: Difficult 


Schluchtenpfad (Berdorf Gorge Trail)

This 3-hour, 19-minute hike spanning 14.4 km is unique for its deep sandstone gorges with striking walls and cascading red sandstone. You will also be immersed in Distant views into the Enz valley and  Roter Puhl, a red sandstone plunge pool on the Enz. To make the most of this hike, you can also book a guide to explain the Schluchtenpfad's vast landscape and biodiversity. This trail It is adventurous without being extreme, and the scenery feels truly cinematic.
